Book Review: The Beginner’s Guide to Writing Knitting Patterns [Kate Atherley, April 11, 2016 edition]

April 23, 2016

True to form, Kate’s work is thorough and this book encompasses more than what its title suggests.

In Short:

If you are thinking about, or already write, knitting patterns, this is the book for you. Technical editors, regardless of experience, will find useful material.  Practical information guides you in writing patterns, submitting to magazines as well as selling online.  Definitely worth purchasing, you will keep referring to this book.

In Detail:

Layout:  Very easy to read.  Along with information pertaining to the chapter, pages feature  ‘Advice From An Expert’ and ‘Don’t Just Take It From Me’ sections, which reinforce what works and what buyers are looking for in your patterns.  Shortcuts to very helpful information are listed in the appendix.

Content:  Available for viewing on amazon and I encourage you to do so.  Chapters are logical. Kate takes you through the why, basics of what is required, how it is done, possible confusion points (lots of examples on this – which is GREAT), layout, technical editing, test editing, self publishing, submitting to publications, selling online and copyrighting.

Unexpected Bonus:  Great tips on submitting to publications, as well as selling on Ravelry.   'Appendix A: Basic Template Pattern' lists all information required in a pattern.  Appendix C has a good list of resources for any level knitter.

This book will be an invaluable resource for pattern writers and technical editors alike – all the information you require in one volume!

Note:  I am a big fan of Kate Atherley’s work.  I asked to review this book.  All opinions expressed are mine.  I have included links that I think will be of interest.  Please note that I am not compensated.
